KPV is a synthetic tripeptide — a chain of three amino acids: lysine (K), proline (P), and valine (V). It has the molecular formula C₁₆H₂₉N₃O₄, a molecular weight of 327.42 g/mol, and is identified by CAS number 67727-97-3. KPV corresponds to amino acids 11 through 13 of alpha-melanocyte-stimulating hormone (alpha-MSH), a 13-amino-acid neuropeptide produced naturally in the pituitary gland.

The tripeptide was first characterized during research into the structural components of alpha-MSH, when scientists sought to identify which portions of the larger molecule were responsible for its various properties. KPV represents the C-terminal fragment — the last three amino acids at the tail end of the alpha-MSH sequence. It is classified as a melanocortin-derived peptide fragment. The compound is supplied as a white to off-white lyophilized powder, soluble in water at concentrations of 1 mg/mL or greater, and requires reconstitution with bacteriostatic water before laboratory use.
